Re: trailing in pots
Isn't it a coincidence Bobbi, I purchased the two plants you mentioned, the
potato & the Vinca about a week ago. They're both hanging alone next to each
other now. The potato has grown about 3 inches already. I cut back the Vinca
because it was too springy. Amazing isn't it = I wonder if there is some
sort of message being sent???? Do you believe in spirits??? Ha!

Susan,
First of all I'd like to recommend the black sweet potato vine, Ipomoea
batatas. See if you can get a start from some other gardener; it is
unbelievably prolific at producing tubers, which are easy to winter over.
Second, the trailing variegated "annual vinca"--Vinca major I believe,
with pale green foliage edged in white and lavender flrs, which often
lives over outdoors in my zone. You may be a bit colder. I have both of
these in pots. Third, any number of indoor begonias can do double duty as
trailing plants in shady areas.
Fourthly I'd just like to say that if at this time of year you can still
go out and find summer annuals and bedding plants, you are extremely
lucky. As of mid June around here, the nurseries were sold out of
everything. I was trying THEN to buy the stuff you are buying now! So,
where is the entrepreneurial spirit around here? Are the nursery people
just tired after working so hard since early March? Or are they so rich
that they can afford to quit after 3 months? Or do they figure that they
want to punish everyone who didn't plant their garden punctually by May
10? It so happens that I have an EXCELLENT excuse for not planting this
stuff May 10. Do they care? No!!
Thank you for letting me vent, and consider yourself lucky if you live
somewhere where you can buy plants at nurseries after June 1!
