Cherrylaurel

Does anyone in zone 5 or 6 grow cherrylaurel (aka English Laurel), Prunus
laurocerasus? Supposedly it is good for shade, and has white flowers in
spring and beautiful dark green foliage which it keeps in the winter. I
believe this is not related to mountain laurel, but is a type of evergreen
cherry tree--supposedly. I don't find it in Dirr's book. It seems to be
grown farther south, judging from the nurseries that I find offering it.
Can anyone comment on cultivars for our area and on possible sources for
this shrub? Is it indeed evergreen in shady situations? Does anyone grow
the straight species? Thanks. I would be very interested in trying it if
it is truly evergreen--but sounds too good to be true.
