Deborah,
Adelma Simmons wrote a ton of books and up until her death if not beyond
they were all in print. I haven't checked that since then, but literally
hundreds of thousands of copies must have been sold in total. Even now if
you look on abebooks you will find about 250 available from used book
stores. She was in great demand to speak at herb workshops all over the
country, and hundreds, maybe thousands, attend these workshops (and she
sold her books at all of them, as well as at Caprilands).
As a matter of fact, I only learned about Simmons from an upstate NY
friend who was a great admirer. But I had the distinct impression that in
the herbs and dried flowers world, she was HUGE! In fact, is there really
anyone who has taken her place in that world?
As a result of this exchange, I've been rereading HERB GARDENING IN FIVE
SEASONS (1964) and finding it pretty nifty, but suspect some of the
botanical names are outdated. Her ideas are wonderful and the recipes look
lucious.
