I read the plant tags on a number of mine (I have about 5-6 cultivars) and
they say sun to light shade. One of my happiest gets good morning sun, then
fairly light shade conditions but no sun. One of my Palace Purple is in
some pretty heavy shade and it is flowering but the plant is about 2 years
old and is very small. The ones I have in pots that get about 4-5 hours
direct morning sun looked scorched. On the other hand, a Pewter Veil and
another ruffley beauty (pardon if I don't have time to run out to the garden
to check its name) get afternoon sun for 3-4 hours and they're not scorched
at all.
I am thinking the real trick is giving them enough water. The tags say
water once a week in dry weather. The ones in the pots dry out fast since
they're contending with an ornamental grass and an overgrowth of petunias
and salvia.
