Hosta do make a nice ground....and I love them BUT they die back completely
in winter so if you hillside is subject to runoff after they die back and
before they re-emerge, you may want to find some groundcover which is above
ground all year...or at least during the affected months.
As for inexpensive hosta: try http://www.hostasonline.com/.
I've never ordered from them, but it's worth it to go see the graphic on the
home page....cool water
