another azalea question

Hiya,

Like some of you, I'm gardening in zone 4 (Minneapolis) and until the
University of Minnesota researchers, bless them, created the "Lights"
series of cultivars ("Northern Lights," "Spicy Lights," "Rosy
Lights," others) we just didn't have any azaleas that grew here.
We've had viable azaleas now for about 10 years, or more, and some of
these plants are getting pretty nice-sized.

My question is about pruning. It seems to me that the "Lights"
azaleas will not take a severe pruning such as is given the azaleas
in traditional Japanese gardens, where the plants give the effect of
a bank of undulating clouds. The sort of pruning I'm thinking of is
shown at this URL:

Anybody have any experience with this sort of pruning on the Lights azaleas?

TIA,

Karen. [didn't see this addressed on the rhodie site Marge gave the link for]
