Louise,

If you lived in the cold Northeast, this plant is treasured plus it is grown
by alpinists all over the world. It is not weedy here. Most growers select
out the rangy, tall plants and what results is a late May patch of mostly
brick red columbines which are less than 30 cm.

A. canadensis is strongly perennial. Unlike other columbines it does not
cross- pollinate and one plant will live a long life. A. canadensis, once
established, is very drought tolerant, it is normally found in half shaded,
rocky areas.

I did not know this plant extended much further south and did not distinguish
itself for you.
