Marilyn,  to answer your questions,
1. Hydranges do better in lots of sun, and will grow to be larger than a
mountain laurel.  Furthermore, depending on what zone you are in, the blue
hydrangeas will often die back to the ground in cold winters of 0 degrees
F.

2. As far as I know, the ants have never been a problem in my garden.  The
swarm is just that, the colony is dividing itself.  A couple of hours
later, everything should appear to be back to normal.

3.  Foxgloves also like lots of sun.  In my garden, the ones in shade
flop, while the ones in sun stand straight and tall.
