Hello to all,
Bit of renovation going on here in the oldest part of the garden.
For some reason that I no longer remember, I made the decision to plant
lily of the valley in a raised bed beneath my white blooming redbud tree.
Well, now that about 9 years have gone by, the only thing in the bed is lily
of the valley. All my finer plants have long been smothered out of
existence. Trying not to harm the roots of my Cercis canadensis 'Texas
White', I dug all the lily of the valley out of the bed the first part of
this week, turning the soil over as I went, sifting with my fingers for any
pieces of root. I then brought in a goodly layer of old potting medium from
the nursery and a layer of composted manure. All was turned and mixed into
the old soil length-wise and then again cross-wise.
Yesterday morning I planted the "L" shaped area. Hellebore x garden
hybrids in pink and white with red eyes were to be among the larger focal
points. The some very nice ferns... Japanese beech and the new "Ghost"
painted ferns. Primula? ... you bet. Six of the P. veris "Katy McSparron". 3
each of the P.veris "Sunset Shades". 3 Primula vulgaris hose in hose red.
Leaving a bit of space for some new gold laced that are coming along. All
should be in full bloom just as the white blooming redbud comes into
bloom... about mid-April. If all goes well it should be quite a show piece
for the lower center of my garden. The foliage is varied enough to carry the
area the rest of the year as one walks by the paths on either side of the
bed.
Now that I have a large bed with mostly April blooms I need to go to
another section of the garden and plant some fall blooming perennials for
balance.
So. What are you guys up to in your gardens this time of the year?
Also sent to Primula list.
