I too have a narrow area that gets no direct sun at all. I've planted grass
specificaly for deep shade and I reseed to fill the spaces every fall and
spring. There's not enough sun for seeds to germinate so weeds aren't a
problem.
I have hosta for size and show, astilbe for taller filler and flowers too
and violets as ground cover.    I have a soaker hose in the bed to keep the
astilbe happy and use slug bait to keep the hosta looking good.
The space is lush and green and the large and varied hosta create a great
impact. With those big and variable coloured leaves, who needs flowers.
