Anelle,
I am not Marge, but I bet this shrub was a Hebe. Used to be part of the Veronica
family (so the man was sort of right), but there was a name change. Hebes have
opposite leaves and look very neat and tidy, flws either white or lavender. Not
hardy most places in the US but I know they grow in England and the Bay area.
Take a look at the photos here and see if anything looks familiar.
