Having grown the species for so many years with no problems, I got
the variegated form as well.  It lingered around for maybe 4 or 5
years and then just up and died.  I have a feeling that, being
variegated, it is simply not as robust as the non-variegated types
and may object to the extreme summer heat and humidity in my (and
other eastern US southern climates).  When it's happy, it's a
stunner, but like the variegated hydrangeas, not in my garden:-(
