Hi Narda
I have never heard of a systemic fungicide doing much for hosta
nematodes nor any pesticide other than nemacur. There are a couple of
other ways to kill nematodes that don't seem to work very well. The best
way is to find someone who still sells nemacur but it is getting harder
and harder to find. I got the last bag in the whole state of Iowa from
what I can tell. I think the pesticide sellers could sell off their old
stock but no more is being produced. You have to have a pesticide
license to get it.
Bob,
You are probably right, it never occurred to me that the Wade and Gatton
people would tell me a story. They recommended using cygon by the directions on
the package. Routine spraying is the recommendation. Several other people
that I know are using the rose treatment because of the systemic properties of
the pesticide in the rose care product, the fungicide is not the useful
ingredient.
I don't have any way of getting nemacur, it is totally illegal in KY and I
think in OH too. My sister checked that one out two years ago while she still
had her spraying license and it was totally banned in KY. Some speculate that
the total ban of all the high powered pesticides is what has allowed the ugly
nematode to raise its ugly head in our gardens.
The person who comes up with a cure for the problem will probably make a fair
amount of money on the product, or the company that comes up with a cure I
should say.
