Re: hostas nematodes and etc.

It sounds like there is interest in foliar nematodes. At first no one (in
hostas) wanted to really talk about it or admit they might have them. I guess
my main questions would be:

If they have always been around in ferns, why have we just started noticing
symptoms, started researching and looking for controls in hostas within the
last five years or so? Wouldn't they have always been a problem? This leads to
my original question, which as Narda stated might mean I end up with no
hostas, are we early in the game and can they be gotten rid of by judicious culling?
Apparently, they are very difficult to irradicate and make hostas really
unsightly. I am not interested in growing a plant that looks gross from the end
of July through September. Will this become the beginning of the end of the
popularity for growing hostas? Funny, but three or four years ago my main
concern with my hostas was crown rot. Two years ago I decided to start throwing
any that showed symptoms and I have hardly any problem now. Maybe it won't be
that easy with nematodes, I was hoping...
