Hi Sherryl,
Sorry, not up-to-date on sources in your area for Clethra. Wayside Gardens
catalog has a couple listed. Wayside's quality is good but they're pricey.
In my area, I've visited nearly a dozen nurseries and garden centers and
only two yielded Clethra. It's the same old story: we sell what the
customers want. The question, however, is what do the customers know if the
nurseries don't educate them?
My wife's sister and husband live in Wagner, OK. We plan to visit them later
this summer. They moved from northwest Illinois to Wagner a year ago. They
were here over the July 4th holiday weekend and provided plenty of tales
(mostly woes) of gardening in unfamiliar territory. They want me to come to
provide "plant doctor" advice.
Sorry I can't be of much help on finding Clethra. Perhaps extension service
folks, your state horticultural society or state nursery association might
be of help. The extension office for your area will be in the phone book;
how to reach the others, I don't know but the extension people ought to have
the answers.
Another possibility: an arboretum in Oklahoma City or elsewhere in the state
might provide information on Clethra care and where to find these plants.
Good hunting,
John
