Re: [SG] Plant Suggestions

With all due respect, Clyde should have stressed that the variegated form
of Ampelopsis, which is weaker and better behaved, be used. I ordered the
variegated form from Shady Oaks Nursery several years ago, and by mistake
they sent me the plain green leaved form. I called and complained. In
response, they sent me not the right plant, but a 50-cent refund!!

I planted the plain green form anyway, hoping for the best, and it romped
up the little fence I'd planted it against, romped through my big white
lilac bush, romped over to the telephone pole and up it, and now a great
ugly sheaf of porcelain vine is draping over and weighing down the
electric lines into our house. We have cut it off at the base, but the
dead stuff is still there looking yucky. Plus my husband is greatly
annoyed and may never forgive me.

If there had been anything taller than the telephone pole around for it to
climb up, it would still be climbing. Sounds kind of like kudzu, doesn't
it??? "Put up a trellis," indeed. The moral, if any, is that in gardening
you NEVER bother to hope for the best. Just expect the worst and save
yourself some time.
