[SG] Blue Hostas

Carmel and friends,

Getting a blue hosta to be blue is, as many of you have suggested,
problematical.

Blue hostas in my garden in Central New York are most blue when:

1) They are in open shade;
2) They are mature clumps (at least 4 or 5 years old); and
3) It is the middle of the season, June, rather than early spring or late
summer.

That said, the bluest rugose hostas that I grow are:

1) Abiqua Drinking Gourd
2) Love Pat
3) Lee Armiger
4) Big Daddy
5) Tokudama
6) Blue Umbrellas (which tends to be shiny rather than dull)
7) Betcher's Blue (not as rugose)

Many of the tardiana group are very blue also, but are usually not
particularly rugose.

Cheers,
Steve Chamberlain
