Re: [SG] peat alternatives

Good evening to all:

Interesting posts about peat moss. I have been using peat moss with my soil
mixes for my rhodies for years, and as soon as I use up my last 2 bails that
might be it. K-Mart sells "Magic Earth" for about $4.88 per 33 lbs.. It
contains no peat moss; it's porous; retains water; absorbs water should it dry
out. It Composed of clay, shreded swamp grasses, and shreded wood. I think
thats their formulation.

The problems I run into is that K-Mart will not reduce the price if you want
to buy in bulk (a pallet holds about 40-50 bags) and if you don't stock up
they sell out of it quickly. This material is much less back breaking than
making your own up from composted manure, sharp sand, humus, leaf mold,
compost, etc..

happy gardening,
