Re: [SG] peat moss alternative


The use of peatmoss in gardening is absolutely unnessary. Once the peat
comes in contact with active soil organisms it decomposes rapidly. Most
attributes made to peatmoss are only valid if it is used only pure or with
other inert material like sand, vermiculite or perlite.

Alternatives to peatmoss are compost, manure and applications of mulch. The
pepurtuating myth of compost seems to work from all the peatmoss I see for sale
and the corresponding acreage of peatbogs destroyed.

On our nursery we use a variety of composts like composted papermill sludge,
municipal compost, composted grape-skin+seeds, hardwood barks and spent
mushroom compost.
