Hi Carrie,
We don't really have much of a spring, generally. It gets hot here very
quickly. I just bring the pots out when it gets up around 70-75
consistently. They come out of dormancy on their own, when they are good
and ready.
I would suggest leaving the tubers inside until it is truly hot. They will
remain in dormancy for much longer if you put them out *way* to early (just
after last frost). Revving the tubers up in a warm room or on top of the
refrigerator will give them the jumpstart they need to have showy leaves
right after last frost.
I usually just try to be patient. We have such a long growing season, and
they stay outside till just before first mild frost. Besides, I'm still
pretty bad at drowning/drying things I try to force. :-/
