Cyan;
I was lucky enough to see this extraordinarily beautiful plant one time.
It was actually at the edge of a small 5 acre woods. I was walking the
fence line of a hay field and caught sight of them as I came to the
corner of the field where it came up against the woods. There was a
small 'patch' of them in an area about 3 feet in circumference. Like you
would find a 'patch' of spring morel's.
I had no idea what they were. Fortunately I had time that afternoon to
go to our local library and check out a book on mushrooms.
I had to cut hay the next day and didn't get back to the area until the
following morning. Lucky for me that there were new "pipes" growing,
because the gorgeous deathly white pipes that stood so proudly the first
time I saw them, were now nothing more than a pile of gooey black muck!
It was shocking to see what could happen to the plant in such a short
period of time!
I didn't try to transplant any of the 'pipes', but it's easy to believe
that it would be impossible, considering the delicacy of the plant. I
don't recall what I read about how they spread, but I imagine it's the
same as with mushrooms. By spores.
