I would love to know what all of the different types of bees are that we see
in our garden. Some are so small and unique. I remeber one year I was
pollinating hostas and I looked down into my egg carton of pollens I was
crossing with that day, and there was a tiny bee down in the pollen just
rolling around in it the way a dog rolls in grass. It looked like it had just
found heaven on Earth. The bumblebees are so amiable. You can chase them
away from a flower bloom and they just go on to the next flower, never seem to
mind.
There is another small bee that will land all over my hands and legs if I am
working in the sun this time of year. They don't bite and are about 1/4" long
but they must eat the salt on my skin because they will get behind my knees or
in the crook of my elbow and if I kneel down or bend my elbow...OUCH!
We have some vicious ground bees, hornets, whatever, that become very
agressive in August. They are not as big as the bees you mentioned, but I
steer very clear of them. They will chase you down.
Too bad there's not an entomologist on our robin.
