Re: [SG] Hydrangeas

I was wondering if Vicky had H. arborescens in some form, but wasn't sure
it was hardy that far north. I have H. a. 'Grandiflora' growing in deep
shade and also the oak-leaf hydrangea, which I adore. I believe both of
these are zone 5 plants.

Another plant Vicky might consider is an elderberry, perhaps one of the
variegated ones. There are purple and yellow-leafed forms too. And
cut-leaved forms. And ones with pink flowers! I was reading about them in
the Jan-Feb 98 issue of FINE GARDENING and they are hardy to zone 3. Even
the plain elderberries are pretty nice. Forest Farm Nursery sells the
fancy ones, and so do Heronswood and several other places. They seem to
prefer a fairly shady situation. The article said they are easily pruned
to any size you want.
