Crocus sativus. You can get bulbs from Nichols Garden Nursery,
www.pacificharbor.com/nichols/ They ship in September for fall bloom.
Be advised that they're not supposed to be watered from June to Sept., and
when you harvest your crop, you hand pick only the orange stigmas, one to a
flower.
Or you can use dried safflower flowers in place of saffron. You have to
use a lot more of them, but they're a LOT cheaper, and if you use enough to
get your color, I don't find any difference in flavor, either. Mexican
food stores would carry this on a spice rack, and call it "Azafran." they
call the real thing the same thing, BTW. Margaret
