Nancy - I too don't think of sweet autumn clematis as a thug.  It
covers 50ft of fence each year and looks marvelous in September...yes,
 precisely on time!  The fence looks like a 6ft green hedge 50 ft
long ...great backdrop for perennials and I cut it to the ground
every year.
