Annabelle hydrangea

Hi all,

I have 5 Annabelle Hydranges, 2 in front and 3 in back. The foliage looks
good on all 5. The 3 in back were planted in a group 3 years ago, but 1 died
over the winter and the nursery replaced it last spring.

The flowers are big and turning white on the 2 in front, but only on 1 of the
3 in back. The flowers of 2 of them are not "opening" up the way the others
are. Only 3 or 4 of the florets (is that the technical term for the little
individual flowers that make up the whole??) around the outside of the
cluster have opened. The whole flower head (for lack of knowing what to call
it) is turning white though, including the unopened ones.

Sooooo, is anyone else experiencing this? What could cause it? My sister
suggested I cut them off and see if it will produce new flowers since it's
not that late in the season...any ideas?

Thanks,
Cindy Johnson
