deadheading

Now that Bill Shear is back, maybe he will talk about deadheading.

Deadheading is another tiresome chore. I attended a talk on daffodils where
the expert said deadheading was not useful for the next year's bloom. If you
could tolerate the deadheads you could save time better spent elsewhere in
the busy summer months. We have soooooooooo many daffodils this was music to
my ears.

It seems that on monocots the bloomstalk is formed in the previous year and
the energy is expended whatever you do.

The biology of this must be fairly complicated extrapolated into the hand on
the pruners it could be helpful if we knew the truth here.

I have not sheared the nepetas to date. They have flopped and in the center
is the new growth with no assistance from me.

If one just waits for the natural process and tolerates a few deadheads what
really happens?
