Nancy, do try C. racemosa. Like Joe-Pye Weed and Clethra, it is a native.
The Penstemon is a CV of a native, also. Using natives when possible is a
virtual guarantee that the plants will thrive, with halfway decent care!

I think it looks enough like C. ramosa to give the same effect.
