Re: [SG] Ratty Hostas

Sheila and others:

Slugs and insufficient moisture are two problems for hosta this time of
year. Most of mine have escaped ratty appearance with this simple solution
for combatting slugs:

Take one can of beer. Fill saucers, placed at a few locations in my hosta
garden, with beer. I enjoy a sip each time a fill a saucer. I'm happy, the
slugs get happy, then die.

Seriously, the beer method does work.

I use aluminum sulphate for plants that prefer an acid soil; I've seen no
ill effects upon me, the plants or the neighborhood environment. Of course,
if I ate the stuff it would be harmful.

How many things used in everyday life are considered poisonous or unsuitable
for the environment? Take plastics, for instance. Should we refuse to
purchase plants in plastic containers?
