<<<<How does the garden tour work? Do you drive to each garden or are they
within walking distance? Is there someone giving tours at each one or do
you tour it on your own. I've never been to one, but have often wanted to
go.>>>>
Our gardens are all in walking distance though it could be a hefty walk
depending on how "in-shape" you are. We try to get 3 or 4 gardens within
the immediate vicinity of each other to make it easier. A lot of people
simply drive from area to another.
People check in, pay, and get a brochure telling about each of the gardens
and a map. We get businesses to place ads in the brochure, some will
"sponsor" the event for up-front advertising throughout. For example, a
local greenhouse has donated a fair amount to cover publicity expenses,
day-of-tour costs, and donated planters for a raffle. Expenses are not
great - its pretty "grass roots", "home grown", "small town" etc. stuff but
lots of fun.
At one of the gardens, we have "classy" refreshments and appetizers. The
remaining gardens usually offer water or lemonade or something (depends on
whether the owner feels like it, and what he/she wants to serve).
The owners are usually there to greet people and answer questions. Its a
real neat way to meet people! Our garden club trys to supply one volunteer
per each garden to help out if the owners indicate a desire for assistance -
most do not. We get about 150-200 people, so that is a potential
$1500-$2000 less expenses (which advertising/sponsorship usually covers).
