Following the discussions on Aquilegia, this appeared today on the Alpine
List.  I am sending it along as it show thats most native columbines grow in
low rainfall areas and on soils that are free draining.

It may be that some of the more colorful hybrids can manage other conditions
but most Aquilegias are not moist soil plants.  At one time I thought
columbines were shade plants and some here do bloom well in the shade.  None
maintain themselves in moister or thickly mulched soil.   I do nothing to
help them along. What comes up blooms and is allowed to seed.
