Depends where you are, Virginia. In hotter climates, they will
appreciate some afternoon shade. Some forms want more sun than
others, but, as a general rule, I have found that all Heuchera do
better in at least a half day sun. They will actually grow in a lot
of shade, but they won't flourish. Key is that the soil should drain
well, but not dry out and the better your soil is, the bigger more
lush plants you will have.
The new Heucheras have mixed parentage..some are going to be better
plants in one area than another, depending on which species were
crossed to get that particular clone. Those derived from natives of
the east coast will thrive better in the hot summer/cold winter
climates than those whose parents came from Asia. It's not easy to
determine which is what, but if you have difficult climate
conditions, it's going to be worth trying to trace antecedents for
your plants.
