Hi Arnhild,
I grow lilies also, lots of them, but except for the Martagons all mine are
grown
in reasonable sun.
The most important thing you want to remember when under planting your lilies is
that you don't plant other plants with a deep root system . You want to stay
with very shallow rooted plants, that can be removed without disturbing the lily
stem of even competing with the deeper planted lily.
I grow Lamium, Ajuga, Campanula, annual self seeding Snapdragons and Wave
Petunias around mine.
The Lamium, Ajuga and Campanula will grow well in shaded areas I would think.
I would be careful about growing Hosta around them as the Hosta will compete for
the nutrients and moisture very agressively. I have Martagons planted in
amongst my hosta but the martagons will stay in the same spot for a very long
time without having to be dug which is also something else you have to be
concerned
with when under planting lilies... pick plants that will not be affected by
the fact
that you will need to dig your lilies every few years to keep the lily
stands healthy.
I would think also that if you planted Heuchera, Heucherella and Tiarella
with some
distance from the lily stems that you would be okay, just make sure that you
don't
let the plants over take the lily stems.
Violets would also be nice, as would Forget Me Nots perhaps Soapwort and or
even some of the low growing Artimesias, Lambs Ear I think might be to
aggressive for the lilies as would the creeping evergreen type plants. I
planted
some creeping evergreen with mine a few years ago and had to dig it out because
it was over taking the lily stems and the evergreen is a much stronger plant
than the lilies, so the competition with the lilies was to great.
Lilies are a most beautiful flower, in fact I believe the most beautiful of them
all.
You might also ask this same question on the Lillium Listserv, and I am sure
that you
will get many many more suggestions from the people on that list.
Best Regards
