that is a lichen
pronounced lye-ken (in america) and lee chen (in england)
it is a symbiotic relationship between a moss and a fungus. it's fun. and is
genetically identical from the florida panhandle to the arctcic circle, truly
at the peak of it's evolutionary climb.
keep moist. if it dries, water it, and it will become "fresh" again.
amazing stuff.
