Re: Euphorbia ID needed

Yup, Margaret, no surprise about the seed explosion. I am singularly
unsuccessful in trying to collect euphorb seed. One minute they pods
are closed and the next they've shot open and the seed is all over
the map.

I have not had problems handling euphorb seed, but I cannot handle
the plants bare handed; get them most awful contact dermatitis from
them any more...expect that's the origin of what you've read. Took
years of handling with no gloves to develop the sensitivity, but I
always try to warn people to handle these plants with respect...one
never knows when one's time will come:-) Despite this, I would not
be without my euphorbs...one of my favorite genera.

I have also read that gopher spurge has no real effect on deterring
gophers or moles or any other critters. Deer, however, will not
touch euphorbs; something for those plagued with the hoofed menaces
to keep in mind.
