Hello Clyde,
The usual method to my madness is to try the older varieties first then
move on to the latest and greatest. Number of reasons, but primarily the
older ones are usually still around for good reasons. They usually perform
well or they would have been dropped from lack of demand. Disease
resistance, bloom number and size. performance, etc. Many of the latest had
not had garden trials as yet in various parts of the US.
Having said that, I do purchase one of the newest and greatest of the day
on occasion because the photos look too good to pass up.
