Re: [SG] Martagon Lilies

Hello Bobbi,
It may not sound like it, but those prices from Wayside on the Martagons
are quite reasonable. In fact, the price they quote has been quit steady
for some time now. Most named selections and hybrids of the Martagons run
from $20 and up from there. They are supposed to be slow to germinate from
seed and difficult to propagate. I have not tried on mine so far so I am
just quoting others I have read. Perhaps it is time to give it a try?
They do like an edge of the woods type of location. When planting mix in a
bit of hydrated lime. For a lily they do run a bit deep in the ground so do
prepare the soil fairly deep. Deer and rabbits do enjoy them in early
spring when they are emerging. I have gotten in the habit of staking around
them and running fishing line around them until the get up and there are
other things out there for the critters to dine on. M. henryii is the most
vigorous of the ones Wayside offers. Grows to 8 or 9 feet, arching over on
to the Peony foliage nearby. Lots of blooms. Deep green foliage. They are
multiplying slowly. The white I can not remember seeing in a couple of
years now.
