Hi, Coni:
Welcome to the list! We're neighbors, sort of, as I live in Minneapolis.
Since the maple in your yard is so special, you may have to resort to
simply covering the area with gravel or some other non-living ground cover.
Planting between the roots or adding a raised bed on top of the roots will
likely stress the tree and might even do some real damage.
How lovely that you live in your great-grandparents' house. It makes me
smile just thinking about it. I've got some of my late grandmother's
columbine seeds which a cousin's wife sent me last fall. They've been slow
to start, but are still growing. I do hope to get some plants from them!
They're just the regular blue ones, but quite special to me.
Karen. [happy to have another Zone 4 person around to trade ideas and
suggestions (and maybe even plants?) with]
