Zone 4 gardeners:
Can't recall who but I think it was Cyan who asked about a zone 4
magnolia. There is a good article on magnolias in the June issue of
Horticulture magazine. They list several which are hardy in zone 5 (
'Elizabeth' beautiful cream color; 'Royal Star' cultivar of Japanes
species M. stellata with many around here in the Cleveland area; M.
virginiana, 'Judy' and 'Rustica Rubra').
As with most plants you can get them to survive in a colder climate
if you provide plenty of protection and TLC.
Hope this helps.
