P.S. I think it VERY important to many to know the pedigrees of plants.

Clyde,

On pedigrees I would in the most gentle way disagree. I think in listing all
parents of a cross the information is not helpful to the average gardener.
More helpful is location, water needs and other horticultural information.

In addition this discussion allows me to say something that I have often
thought about. When very young, I was somewhat contemptuous of the botannic
descriptions. Later I thought how very efficient and certainly useful to the
gardener who wishes to obtain the correct plant when he orders. Also,
horticulture is served by this fine system.

Now more experienced and having been through as many as three or four name
changes for favorite plants (clematis paniculata for instance) I am of the
opinion that this system hampers the practice of horticulture (not botany). A
good reference that is up-to-date will have names I have not learned. If a
section of synonyms is not part of the reference I cannot find the plant. Who
has time to sort through plant keys for ID?

In summary, cimicifuga 'Brunette' may be all we need to order a plant, the
ancestry could be archived elsewhere.

Respecting your affection for pedigree Clyde, I have lost patience with chores
that waste my time.
