Jennifer, I am sure shells are fine to use. In the olden days in CA
(before abalone became extinct) people used to edge their flower beds with
abalone shells all the time. It was quite a cliche in those days, but I
would love to see abalone shells now. I'm sure it did no harm to the
plants.
