Choose a rapid grower so the display in the pot is attractive through the last
half of summer. I use water soluble fertilizer more often than on bedded
plants and combine the pots with other plant varieties in pots for an
attractive display.
If it is display you want you would probably choose a variegated hosta. We
are using 'Antioch' this year and have pots of plantaginea and 'Aphrodite' to
move near the house when they bloom.
I pull them out of the ground in early spring and put in pots of very rich
soil. Because I am in zone 4, I return them to the beds or to the vegetable
garden in fall. I have never lost a potted plant.
