One of the key factors in growing hostas in pots is to never over pot. Use a
container that will just accomodate the roots, then once the roots start to
grow of the bottom, move up to the next size pot......and so on.
Rather than planting a hosta in a nice ceramic or terracota pot, I keep them
in the black plastic nursery pots but then place that inside a nice looking
pot and then cover the surface of the potting soil with gravel.
I use a ready mixed potting soil (we say compost) that is slightly acidic,
moisture retentive and has plenty of added gravel for good drainage and
rooting. The only extra food my 200 odd containers get is Osmocote slow
release granular fertilizer.
