Peggy - Margaret passed along some very good advice - any type of marker has
a life of it's own and goes where it will even without human assistance. I
use graph paper and a ratio of 1/2" to a foot - and then I number the beds
(though only I know where bed #1 ends and #2 begins) After a while these
charts begin to get rather messy - depending on whether you are a constant
"rearranger" plants are x-ed out, other plants are substituted, etc. - so
about every couple of years I redo, which is so easy when you have the old
chart from which to work. Dating the charts is essential and I keep the old
ones in a file for reference - sort of fun to look back on.
I know there must be some way to do this all on the computer and I have heard
that there is software available for "garden design" - maybe next winter.
Right now on these gorgeous early summer days there is hardly time to read
the mail!
One more tip - (and I thought this was rather silly when I first heard it)
- bury a tag at the bottom of the planting hole as you are putting in that
new and unforgettable acquisition. Believe me, those tags don't go anywhere!
