Moerheims Glory, a light pink with arching plumes gets in the 6 foot range
in time. It's a late bloomer here....late being late August into September.
I think the typical influences of latitude, temperature and moisture make
the difference in flowering time. Lake Champlain, 60 miles west of here by
car, is almost always 2 weeks ahead. Superba is late August too and is
noticeable when the monarch butterflies are feeding heavily in preparation
for their trip south.
I took a walk around part of Kettle Pond this morning. It's just that, a
pond carved out by a glacier, with some sandy edges lined with granite
boulders. I always look around Memorial Day for large yellow Lady Slippers,
Moccasin Flowers (pink Lady Slippers to me). I wasn't disappointed today
save for a couple empty pockets left by someone's shovel I expect. Also
enjoyed bunchberries, trout lilies, Indian Cucumber Root and a few other
reminders that Spring is on it's way.
