Nancy,
I have to jump into the acanthus discussion for a zone 5 report. I first saw
a. mollis at St. Louis Bot. Gardens (zone 6) in bloom and had to try it. I
have had it for about 5 years, through some -20 temps and it has bloomed the
last two years and is budding this year. It grows about 2 feet from a
constant water source in a well drained (pea gravel and compost) soil. It
receives about 5 hours of morning sun, and is shaded in the afternoon. I
have a friend who also grows and flowers it in zone 5, too. In the book I am
looking at, it says some species will survive in zone 7 (6 with protection)
but will not flower. That's what makes it so much fun to experiment with
plants! Beating the odds.

Would love to know what you're going to put in your "Med" garden.
