I don't know what zone you are in but in my Zone 9 experience with
transplanting ferns is that sometimes the ferns may go through a bit of shock
from the transplant.  They may even loose quite a few fronds----don't worry,
keep them watered regularily (sp) for a while and they should bounce back
fine.  I think sometimes that the oils from your skin can also cause the
fronds to turn brown during the transplant.  Remember, ferns are some of the
hardiest plants that have ever existed---with a little attention and a good
drink they will do fine.
