Re: [SG] Pruning Japanese Maple

Kemberly,

In a message dated 99-06-09 19:42:11 EDT, you write:

<< That sounds easy enough. I just pulled the tag off.....and it says,
Japanese
Maple Dwarf Red, Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum'.....now what does this name
 mean to you?

Do you think this one will, for the most part, take care of itself? >>

This is a selection of red maple seedlings, that is pretty stable. Care is
quite simple. I hope you've planted it in a very bright situation, where it
will develop the best color. Sun= red in that selection, as it does in most
of them. Water at the ground level, not on the leaves, which can burn from
water in the sun. leave the plant alone for a couple years to see the
development of the canopy.
The canopy should be a rounded, mushroom shape, topping at about 25', if
it'll live in Texas.
Im in NW Georgia, and grow about 85 varieties. They do tolerate some heat.
Good luck with it, and let me know in 5 years how it looks, then we'll talk
pruning.
