Hi, last year, we had an unusually long and warm autumn (I still had
flowers in early December; ordinarily the first hard freeze is in October
and early-mid November sees the first blanket of snow). Some of my plants,
including Astilbes, decided to rebud in November, and most had bloomed by
the time it finally became cold enough to induce dormancy. I had not cut
the stalks, fertilized, or done anything else; given a long enough season,
apparently Astilbes will have a second flowering. I was afraid they would
be exhausted and die over winter, but they are alive and displaying their
typical vigor this year.
