Hi, I have grown these in standing water (about 8"; it was a large plant)
and currently have some in a mud hole. You can pot them to bring inside
during winter (water every day and keep away from registers, drafts, and
other sources of dry, moving air), or lift the bulb (rhizome? corm?), trim
away the plant, and store in sand, peat, or a paper bag - so it won't dry
out - for a couple of months. Start it in a pot indoors a month or two
before its warm enough to plant out, and you will have a nice, big plant
right away. I once potted one and had it growing indoors during winter,
but forgot to water it and it died, so I thought. I left it in place, and
when spring arrived a few months later, I thought I would water it and see
what happened...it regenerated.
